Chances are you’ve seen this and your first thought was positive. But these innovations also come with risks, and you should be mindful of the opportunities such innovations present for bad actors (in this case, car thieves) and the legal implications thereof.
Does that mean you should stop innovating? No!
But it means that a global approach is needed.
For instance, here, automobile security systems may need to monitor many kinds of movement (here, the lifting of a vehicle without a significant change in angle), or those manufacturing such robots should ensure there is limited range, or their deployment is only in locations with additional security measures (e.g. robots safely stored, line of sight by the driver, etc.). Car manufacturers might already have or be considering the first type of measure, as they are subject to cybersecurity obligations (see my article about that here: https://lnkd.in/dA9-ucgj ), just like an increasingly large range of sectors (see for instance the EU’s NIS2 – post about it here: https://lnkd.in/eY7xvpVY ). But the manufacturers of robots and other tools also have their own obligations to comply with, as manufacturers of connected products (read about the EU’s Cyber Resilience Act here: https://lnkd.in/e8h6kXrX ).
Always make sure securitybydesign and legal compliance are part of the discussion and innovation process – and then you can reassure customers and partners that your product or service is both the one they want (features, security, etc) and the one that they need (for compliance, liability and risk management).
(And yes, that’s part of what security consultants and cybersecurity lawyers help companies do)
